I am Conservatism, Hear Me Roar by Brian Anderson
Senator-elect Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts signifies the collective backlash to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda. The majority of Americans are center-right in their political views yet the left wing of the Democrat Party naively interpreted their victories in 2006 and 2008 as mandates to move forward with their radical agenda. In reality, the elections in 2006 and 2008 were the result of frustration with the neo-conservative politics of former President George W. Bush and a Republican controlled Congress that lost its way. The crushing Republican defeats in the 2006 and 2008 elections were a form of punishment for Republicans who spent too much, and expanded the size of the Federal government and for a president who never clearly articulated a justification for the war in Iraq after the build up to the invasion.
Within the past three months the policies of the left have been rejected in two elections. On November 3, 2009 Republicans won gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia. Yesterday, Brown won the Senate seat vacated by Ted Kennedy. Exit polls indicate that the gubernatorial elections on November 3, 2009 were less a referendum on President Obama and more a rejection of the left wing policies of the incumbent Democrat governors. The gubernatorial elections, however, marked the beginning of a serious look at the economy and the policies of the left, especially health care reform. Brown turned the Massachusetts special election into a referendum on the Obama-Pelosi-Reid health care plan.
Massachusetts is significant in the health care debate since it has compulsory health care that is similar to the Obama-Pelosi-Reid plan. RomneyCare, as Massachusetts health care has been dubbed because former governor Mitt Romney pushed and signed the legislation into law, has far exceeded estimated costs. The citizens of Massachusetts did not want to subject the rest of America to their style of mandatory health care. Hence, yesterday's special election in Massachusetts was a referendum on President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid.
The latest health care poll on RealClearPolitics.com, which was conducted by Rasmussen from January 16-17, shows that 56 percent of Americans oppose Obama and the Democrats' health care plan.
The Democratic leadership should listen to the American citizens but they won't. Obama, Pelosi and Reid will try to move forward with their radical agenda. Health care reform is but one piece of the Democrat agenda. The ideology from which the Democratic leadership conceived health care reform permeates the rest of their agenda. The rejection of health care reform yesterday will continue to turn into a rejection of the rest of the left-wing agenda, the apex of which will be in November 2010.
In 2006 and 2008, America rejected big government Republicanism (aka neo-conservatism). In November 2010, America will reject massive government liberalism. Conservatism is on the rise again and as the November 2010 elections draw near, Conservatism's roar will get louder and louder.
